The pitter patter of small feats** a.k.a. Trajectory & locus of my world (at different levels of depth, expertise & concentration)

My missives

Current Focus

  • Pragmatic Cloud Computing

    • VMWare Cloud Infrastructure

      • Building Cloud Concept Lab with Cisco UCS - Good hands on work, from the scratch ! UCS is interesting ...

      • Completed vSphere FastTarck - Will attempt VCP this month (Wish me luck!)

      • Got VCP (VMWare Certified Professional) Certification ! (Dec 1, 09)

      • Attending vSphere troubleshooting class (04/10)

    • Developing "Cloud OS" Concepts

      • Architecture & running Code in Ruby Scala!

      • Coding Cloud APIs - vCloud/OCCI et al with added semantics, Ruby Scala, Predictive Algorithmics for inference based cloud control plane & workload (VMs and composite applications) placement

      • PaaS Cloud Architectures - Hadoop, STM/Actor, RoR

      • Cloud Analytics - Embedding dynamic Primitives

      • Cloud Security

      • Enterprise Extension/Cloud Bursting via Network Cloud Run Book Automation

  • Conceptual Cloud Computing

    • Participating & contributing to DMTF Cloud Incubator - I am the co-chair along with Billy Cox at Intel

      • Our White paper

      • Working on Cloud Security Mechanisms for the Provider Interface (threat & protection architecture, authC, access control, specification & audit of Elasticity rules

      • OAuth chreography for delegated authC for Cloud Provider Interface

    • Member of INCITS/DAPS38 (Distributed Application Platforms and Services) which is the US TAG to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 38. My focus would be the Cloud Computing study group

    • Cloud Networking (blog at VMWare Communities)

  • Writing a Finished Book Enterprise Web 2.0 Fundamentals (I wanted to call it "A Hitchhiker's Guide to Enterprise Web 2.0 Galaxy", but marketing didn't allow it)
    • Web 2.0 EE (Enterprise Edition) is very different from consumer Web 2.0 CE (Consumer Edition). This book will examine the business & techno aspects of Web 2.0 EE
  • Interested in applying social and knowledge graph primitives in Cloud Analytics space
  • Functional Programming and Concurrency - Scala (as I get time ;o()
  • Finally am interested in compute infrastructure & implementations of Genetic Algorithms as a PaaS (need some time to figure this out)

Used To Work On ...

  • Social & Knowledge Collaboration Networks
    • Architecture & development of Web 2.0 E2C Gateway (Enterprise/Cloud Communication Gateway) "Appliance"
      • A communication gateway by the side of firewalls to capture the context & then enable inter-enterprise collaboration!
      • Firewalls simply do not have the rich context to manage a L4+ multi-vector collaboration network. May be this reflects the maturity from coordination-networks to collaboration networks.
      • This will be multi-tenant when placed in a Cloud Service Provider
      • Implementing enterprise-grade OAuth with added security primitives
      • Implementing OpenSocial [Just started]
    • Will contribute to SocialWebXG - I think we can do very pragmatic business relevant work (in the areas of Privacy & Trust) as well as forward looking stuff
  • Social Graph Experiments
  • Ruby and Ruby On Rails
    • Working on contributing to RoR dev - RoR 3, Ruby 1.9 & >
  • iPhone programming
  • Semantic search overlay for a derivative / tagging based collaborative content creation & aggregation (for school lesson plans)
    • We want 20 relevant results not 100,000 results
    • A derivative based, repurposable, remixable, on-demand interchange multi-media content capability (it sounds more lofty than it actually is ;o))
    • Ability to meaningfully stitch a fabric from a vast sea of materials which differ in granularity and format diversity
    • Ability to perform semantic search on the federated content with attributes meaningful to teachers
  • Erlang, Paxos and DHT for clouds [Future]
    • Zookeeper looks interesting - Plan to contribute
    • Vertebra is also interesting - Plan to contribute

A few instances from my Journey from 32K EEPROM and C/CPM to Clouds and Social Networking

  • 32K - that is all we had for developing Real Time Control Apps (& that includes UI on TeleRay! CHR$(27)[1;1)
  • C/CPM - Yep, have developed multi-core apps years ago (actually on 8086,macBasic with two tasks in two buffers) for testing aircraft engines
  • UI with effects like venetian blinds - PEEKing and POKEing at B8000 (if you know what I mean ! And then protected mode came - no PEEKing anmore ;o()
  • Have developed Control software - PID Controls et al - for aircraft engines, Caterpillar transmissions, binary nozzles for air flow in F16 planes,... (Using Turbo Pascal!)
    • Think of reliability one needs, when our software is running an aircraft engine at 30,000 rpm and 300% load (and you are standing nearby looking at the debug screen!)
  • Languages worked on include Ada,Cobol (yep, still remember those pesky 99V99s),Pascal,(some) C, Java, now started looking at Scala, Ruby & Erlang
  • Lotus Notes API programming and work on sales and marketing information systems
  • MCSE,LCNS,JCP,CISSP,CCNA & now VCP certifications
  • Security architecture for eSpeak
  • NIST PKI Workshop participation
  • Sensor Networking
  • MANET & network-centric operations
  • The world of ebXML,RosettaNet,B2B, XML, Tibco,... and work with partners on B2B systems
  • Participating and representing my company at ETSI Specialized Task Force (did some work on Electronic Signatures), W3C, OASIS, JCP et al
  • Guest Lectures at the Naval PG School, Monterey (Cloud Security, sensor networking, programming et al)
  • Technology work in the Application Oriented Networking product offering
  • Architecture and development of Web System for logistics company - work load manager et al
  • Distributed Precision Time Synchronization in the order of microSeconds
  • Policy Control Plane for Cloud virtualization
  • Implementing OAuth with added security to the basic protocol
  • Cloud Computing, social and knowledge graphs, OpenSocial et al...
  • And Now at the CTO's office focussing on Cloud Computing ...

Lego Robotics

  • Tech Judge - First Lego League (FLL) Word Festival Atlanta : 2007, 2008
  • Judge Adviser/Tech Judge at North CA tournaments
  • Rube Goldberg machines using Lego

**[June 17, 2007] I got the idea for the title from the recent Dr.Dobbs Journal last page; will link it when I find it
