CompetitionFaq

Ask questions regarding products for the comp.

  • Are we allowed to install and run custom services?

Yes, but please ask the admins first - that way we can install them for everyone.

  • Are cronjobs allowed?

Yes. The point is to fully automate, so cron jobs are fine.

  • Can we preregister domains?

Yes, but you can't work on non-Open Source code for the contest before the contest starts Friday night.

  • Will the server be setup to allow us to do peanutbutterization?

The server will be setup with a standard LAMP install. The peanutbutterization is up to you!

  • Are we allowed to work on code that will be GPLed post deadline?

If you write code before the competition, it must be Open Sourced (under any Open Source license, including but not limited to the GPL) before the competition. This is to prevent people from just firing up the sekrit project they've been working on for months.

  • What about adult entertainment products?

While we'll make no hard rule about the flavor of services, we'd prefer you stick to services that wouldn't make your mother blush.

  • For those of us competing offsite, should we post our contact information somewhere for IPN and server details?

Yes! Please add yourself to the team signup on the front page.

  • At what time on Friday may we begin development (offsite)?

Same time as everyone - 7:00pm PDT.

  • If I have a pre-registered domain, what will be the best way to set it up?

Point the DNS to 208.185.252.58 ahead of time. If you change this to an offsite IP after the contest has begun, you will be disqualified.

  • Are we permitted to point a sub-domain to an offsite project blog, if we wanted?

Yes, if the offsite website is not a part of the service itself. This can get confusing, though, so we'd like to mildly discourage this.

  • What do we do with the money/code/IP as a team?

The simplest and best way to avoid conflict is to have a one person team. The only other way to avoid conflict is to agree on things before they become a problem. However you do it, if you are planning to make your project something real and you are working with other people, you should probably iron things out before you show up.

  • Where is the contest money going?

This is a fundraiser for the The California Community Colocation Project. :) The organizers of SHDH are not being compensated.

  • Can we pay some money back to users during the competition?

  • At what time and date does the competition officially end?

11:59pm PDT on Sunday, June 4th the hacking will stop and the projects go live. You'll have 30 days to let the project run and earn money. July 4th at 11:59pm PDT, we'll mark project earnings and be able to determine the winners.

  • Am I allowed to use third party APIs?

Yes, as long as you don't have special access to them denied to other participants. For example, if you made an "API" for your own code but didn't let other people use it, then that's just like bringing your own proprietary code to the competition - not fair! But if you use an open, publicly-accessible API, then yes, that's fine.

  • (For offsite Teams)Is it allowed to develop localy and commit via svn?

Yes.

  • (For offsite Teams) Do we have ssh access?

Yes.

  • How will offsite teams receive login information. By email?

Yes. Sorry if we didn't get one out to you tonight. You can also bug us in the IRC channel if you haven't received one yet.
